Brand Refresh 〰️ Type Setting 〰️ Set Design 〰️ Photography 〰️

Play Magazine has been re-imagined with a focus on the incredible visuals games have to show off as well as the brand identity of Playstation’s icons while still balancing structured type setting to effectively deliver articles.

  • I chose to revise this magazine in the zeitgeist of excitement leading up to the release of the game in the cover story for this issue, Final Fantasy XVI. Inspired by A Profound Waste of Time – another set of video game related books I discovered around the same time – I wanted to allow the visuals of the games more breathing room and emphasis to stand out. I also felt that the identity of the magazine could benefit from a refresh, and explored motifs that play off of the iconic square, circle, triangle, and cross symbols that are a part of Playstation’s brand image.

  • The redesign explores 9 spreads that include a table of contents, two feature articles, and a spread of editorial content. All images sourced were found as part of media kits. Interactive PDF integration was implemented into the digital version of the magazine, allowing readers to follow links to external websites for more information on the games reported on. A new logo, type pairing, and patterns were designed for the brand refresh.
